Our Environmental Credentials
Our aims are to:
- Reduce the amount of plastics that are used at the festival
- Promote sustainable re-use solutions
- Recycle the rest and limit the amount that's sent to landfill
In times gone by, the word “festival” used to conjure up Woodstock-infused images of hippies dancing in a field, with flowers in their hair, spreading a message of love for Mother Earth. In reality, festivals have become big business, with big name acts, slick production values and international appeal taking precedence over environmental impact.
We’ve all seen the shocking images of endless litter and waste left behind at these events by the masses. What’s more, the UK’s 3.17million festival-goers generate over 23,000 tonnes of waste annually*, and over 60% of it ends up in landfill. The average UK festival uses 0.6l of fuel per day per person (usually diesel)! The industry as a whole produces around 20 tonnes of CO2 per year – and that doesn’t include all that car travel to get there.
Here at Chilled in a Field, we work hard to look after not only our lovely festival goers, but our festival site and the environment we inhabit. We are determined that Chilled in a Field will minimise it's contribution to this senseless environmental damage and pollution. We may only be a small festival, but we CAN make a difference, and we WILL!
Each year we strive to put new measures in place to combat these issues, and this year is no different.

Here are a few things we’re doing to make Chilled in a Field as environmentally friendly as possible:
Bring Your Own Bottle
It is predicted that by 2050, the oceans will contain more plastic by weight than fish. Horrific isn’t it? This throw-away culture is confounded by the prevalence of single-use plastic bottles, something which we want to be no part of. So, we are proud to say that Chilled in a Field will aim to be as PLASTIC-FREE as possible!! Our Festival Bar and our food vendors will not be selling any drinks in plastic bottles, whether soft drinks or water. So, for all you festival goers that like to stay well hydrated (most important!) we are asking that you bring your own refillable water bottles, which you can then fill up at our free on-site water taps.
Reusable Cups
Because we will be a (mostly) plastic-free zone, all drinks purchased at the bar will be served in reusable plastic cups. These cups will be available at the Chilled in a Field Festival bar, at a small charge of £1 (50p for the small ones), which will be added on to the cost of your first drink. Once purchased, you can keep returning to the bar for as many refills as you like, at the normal price!
Festival Waste
In order to significantly reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill, we will be recycling as much as possible, wherever possible. Plenty of dedicated recycling bins will be available around the site too, so there’s no excuse not to do your bit, in conjunction with our partners at Essential Event Recycling.
Food and Drink
Sometime ago, we made the decision to ban plastic straws so our bar won't be selling any drinks with the added straws. We also ask our food vendors to minimise packaging and use compostable plates and cutlery. They will also have a dedicated food recycling space in the back of house area. We are also proud to say that our beer miles have been considerably reduced and our beer is made just 10 miles from site.
It can be hard for small festivals to do the right thing. Chilled in a Field spends more on recycling than we do on beer! We’re committed to doing everything we can, and with your help we’ll make it happen.
